Just got Scuba Certified? What to do now?

Scuba diving is a thrilling experience that allows you to explore the underwater world and discover a whole new world of marine life. But if you are a new scuba diver, it can also be intimidating and overwhelming. Here are some tips and tricks to help you feel confident and comfortable underwater.

  1. Choose the right gear - Choosing the right scuba gear is crucial to your safety and comfort while diving. Its a good idea to rent gear for a few dives but then purchase your own gear as soon as you reasonably can but after you understand what you really need. Make sure you invest in the high-quality gear that you can reasonably afford and that fits well and is properly maintained. Your gear should include a wetsuit, fins, a mask, a regulator, a BCD, and a dive computer. Purchasing weights and tanks isn't needed unless you dive a lot near you. If your diving will include travel then just rent weights and tanks. Make sure you are familiar with how to use each piece of equipment and practice setting it up before you get in the water.

  2. Practice your skills - After you have completed your scuba diving course, it's important to keep practicing your skills. Set aside time to practice things like clearing your mask, recovering your regulator, and buoyancy control. This will help you feel more comfortable and confident underwater.

  3. Check your equipment - Before every dive, make sure you check your equipment for any damage or malfunctions. This includes checking your tank pressure, regulator, BCD, and other gear. It's better to catch any issues before you get in the water than to discover them while you are underwater.

  4. Plan your dive - Before each dive, make sure you plan your dive with your dive partner. This should include deciding on a maximum depth, a time limit, and a dive plan. Make sure you also discuss emergency procedures and signals. DO NOT change your dive plan while you are diving unless absolutely necessary. You have limited ability to communicate and changes and the plan can lead to you getting lost or getting injured.

  5. Communicate with your dive partner - Communication is key to safe and enjoyable diving. Make sure you and your dive partner agree on hand signals and are familiar with each other's equipment. Check in with each other frequently during the dive to make sure everything is going smoothly.

  6. Relax and enjoy - Scuba diving is meant to be a fun and exciting experience, so don't forget to relax and enjoy it! Take your time exploring the underwater world, and don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for help if you need it.

In conclusion, scuba diving can be a wonderful experience for new divers. By following these tips and tricks, you can ensure that your dives are safe, enjoyable, and memorable.
